Background An Array of Charm, "AAOC", was founded in January of 2004. The AAOC program was initially designed to teach today’s “little girls,” through classes in etiquette, manners, and character, to become tomorrow’s “young ladies." Since that time, our mission and programs have grown both in depth and in scope. Our desire to dig deeper is grounded in our belief that every child can achieve his or her goals, despite his or her circumstance. Our unique approach involves addressing cultural, economic, and educational poverty first through gender-specific foundations training in etiquette, civility, and protocol. We understand that these are three universal languages that, once learned, empower our youth to transcend the social barriers they encounter because of their socioeconomic status. These languages simultaneously broaden the world they live in and narrow it, so that their life goals are no longer out of reach. This serves as the foundation for all of our programming, which also includes academic support, character education, and leadership training.
In the past few years we have seen a tremendous growth in the work and scope of AAOC. Not only has our budget increased by at least 20% each year, but enrollment in our programming has increased from 25 students to 75 students. This growth is partly due to the establishment of partnerships between AAOC and Hull Jackson Montessori, Jones Padeia, IT Creswell Middle, Head Magnet, East End Prep and Robert Churchwell all of whom are located in North Nashville.We provide transportation and aftercare services including homework help, tutoring, etiquette training, and physical education to children at these schools. We also partner with Nashville Rescue Mission to inform families about the services AAOC provides to children. We are poised to continue this growth and expand our services in the coming year. Through new funding sources, we will be offering our services to more low-income kids than ever before, especially the children who live within walking distance.
On June 13, 2017, we plan to take 50 campers to the Smithsonian Institute located in Washington, DC., to visit the new African American Historical Museum. The cost for the Wise Coach bus is $5,850.00 for the 3 day trip and the hotel cost to stay at the Residence Inn is approximately $8,000.00. We believe this is a lifetime dream for the children we serve and it will give them an opportunity to experience a part of American history that was forged by people of African descent. By participating in this wonderful field trip, they can learn about the past so that they can go forward and create a positive future for themselves and others regardless of their background.
In addition, we are aggressively seeking funding to hire additional educational tutors and a part-time special education teacher to assist in addressing the educational needs of the children we serve. Many  children have learning disabilities and/or many are performing below their grade level at school. We would like to overcome these challenges by providing them with tutors and teachers to assist with raising math and literacy skills.
We recently obtained property which will be the future home to AAOC before/after care and summer camp program.  We wish to obtain funding to purchase a building to be placed on the property.

We focus our services in North Nashville, which has one of the lowest median incomes in Middle Tennessee.
Board Chair Statement As the chairperson of AAOC, my greatest desire is to reach out and redefine those basic values that have been cast aside and that are not taught in the traditional school classroom nor in many homes to our children. I believe that social skills such as etiquette, self worth and esteem, character building, and the practice of abstinence are very important parts in the building blocks to becoming a successful person. For example, I believe strongly that etiquette builds character. A strong character builds confidence and with confidence we have the inner ability to go forth and achieve our goals. As the chairperson for AAOC, it has afforded me the personal opportunity to work with many children from all walks of life and teach them those basic human values that hopefully they may grow up to become successful individuals in their everyday lives. Through AAOC, I find it personally rewarding in knowing that I have contributed in a small but significant way in their growth and development. I believe in teaching children that what they learn and do today will always affect their future tomorrow. 
CEO Statement

This year, 2017, has been off to a great start for AAOC Camps for Youth Development. As everyone is aware, it is our thirteenth (13th) year providing services to inner city youths! This summer we are anticipating the registration of over seventy-five (75) boys and girls for summer camp. I am proud to say that the increase in enrollment over the years is due to our partnerships with Hull Jackson Montessori School, Jones Paideia Magnet School, Head Middle School and Haynes Middle School. Then too, we have provided after school care services for the past seven (7) years to these schools and the local community of North Nashville.

In summary, I am proud to state that AAOC operates yearly providing services to youths, parents and the North Nashville community as a whole. To accommodate our expanding growth, we are aggressively pursuing funds to help purchase a center to operate for our children so that we may continue to fulfill our mission.  

Description Our Girls Summer Charm Camp was created in January of 2004 to teach young females who primarily attend Metro Nashville public schools, ages four (4) to seventeen (17), to become tomorrow’s young ladies. Our primary mission and purpose is to teach etiquette, self worth and esteem, character building, abstinence and many other activities involving basic social and life skills, primarily for the benefit of improving family unity and academics. It is an eight-week structured program that is supervised by Metro school teachers, college students and assisted by high school students. AAOC camp site is located at 1026 Cheatham Place, Nashville, Tennessee. The program is open daily, Monday thru Friday, from 7:00 am to 6:00pm and during that time we provide a nutritious breakfast, lunch and evening snack. Please note, our eight week curriculum has been updated to add Twitter, Snapchat, FaceBook and Text Etiquette,

Description “E” is our after school care program wherein we place a strong emphasis on Etiquette and Education. Location: 1026 Cheatham Place, Nashville, TN. Our primary mission is to improve grades and TN Ready test scores by assisting children with their homework daily, providing tutoring services in one or more subject areas (Math, Science, Language Arts/Reading), teaching etiquette with emphasis on mannerisms and discipline. The E Program  offers academic enrichment activities for 50 or more students in grades Pre-K thru-8 at who attend Jones Paideia, Hull Jackson and more schools that are located in North Nashville. Every child that has participated for at least a year in our E Program has graduated high school, and annually, over fifty percent 50% of our participants in the program will show progress in academic achievement by a 40% increase in one or more subject areas (Math,  Science and Language Arts/Reading) as measured by report card grades.

Short Term Success Based on our annual surveys, the passing grades of our student participants have been 100%. 
Long term Success As per AAOC's statistics taken 2016, over 75% of the children that have been enrolled in AAOC programs from 2004 through 2016, have graduated from High School and over 50%  of the children have graduated from college.   
Program Success Monitored By Our program success has been measured over the years by our annual surveys which we distribute to the schools we serve, parents and the students.  The surveys are analyzed at the end of each school year for results.

Description Men of Honour Boys Summer Camp (MOH) is our summer program for young males which also provides the same activities that we teach our young ladies. At MOH, young males ages four (4) to seventeen (17) learn manners, team building, character building and basic survival skills. This camp opened June 1, 2008, and is also located at 1026 Cheatham Place Nashville, TN. Our purpose is to build integrity, health and character. At MOH we challenge our campers in many ways through mentoring, building lasting relationships, athletics, and academic enrichment activities. Since opening MOH, we have provided services to over 500 boys that live in the 37207 and 37208 zip codes. This summer we plan to partner with other local camps and compete in various activities to include basketball, soccer, ping-pong tournaments and football. Also, as a part of our community services, the boys voted this year to collect gifts again and present them to the boys that live at the Family Life Center located on Rosa Parks Blvd..

For over thirteen (13) years we have worked with Nashville inner city youth and I have observed while working with our children that it appears more of them are being diagnosed with mental health and behavior problems. In order to accommodate them we continue to partner with TN Voices for Children, Mental Health Co-op and Regional Intervention Program (RIP) . These wonderful agencies have assisted our staff and parents through providing services and/or workshops which have helped us to overcome many of the barriers and issues we continue to  face. Today with ongoing training and workshops we are able to continue our mission to empower inner city youth by providing them with the academic competencies, social skills and leadership training required to create a positive change in their lives.

Gangs in Middle Tennessee

Middle Tennessee's gangs are no longer just graffiti-spraying juvenile delinquents. They are armed and dangerous criminal enterprises that recruit young people with the allure of fast money, street status and a sense of belonging - even if the group they join may get them killed or sent to prison. Gangs are expanding from inner city neighborhoods to suburbs and small towns; they recruit in schools, playgrounds and neighborhoods. The percentage of Middle Tennessee's crimes caused by gangs is unknown; police are not able to track it consistently because it permeates our communities in a number of ways. But authorities say they see enough new activity to know gang activity on the rise.

Childcare & After-School Programs

All Tennessee families should have access to high quality, developmentally appropriate child care and after-school programming for their children, regardless of income level.

Adoption & Foster Care

Parents dropping their kids off at school may not realize their child sits next to a young person in the foster care system. Students may not realize their classmate is not going home to his or her own parents, but to a group home or foster care placement. No sign on this child would alert anyone that he or she has likely suffered abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

Youth Violence

In Tennessee, gang presence has been on the rise since the late 1980s and early 1990s, when gangs first made a concerted push into the state. Since 2011, police have identified at least 5,000 gang members in Davidson County, and gang-related crimes have increased by 25%. Meanwhile, cities with 50,000 or fewer inhabitants have seen gang-related crimes triple in frequency nationally since 2005.
