Background

After moving to Nashville, Tennessee in the early 1980s, Campbelle-Holman found that inclusively instructive methods of teaching music were little known to the local public school system…private schools had various opportunities. It was at that point that she made it a mission to provide choral arts and integrated learning to any middle TN child.

Since then, Choral Arts Link (CAL), Inc. became an integrated programmatic approach environment using evidence-based methodology that is utilized for students and teachers. Local music educators were recruited to develop a strong youth chorus known as The MET Singers Honor Choir. In addition to offering opportunities to students, participating music educators receive hands-on choral development training. The programmatic focus of the organization includes: The MET Singers Honor Choir, MET Choral Camp, and MET Academy.

MET Choral Camp, begun in 2001 was a 1 week session, and since 2010 has increased to 2 weeks has now evolved into MET Summer Academy, which is now a three week session.

MET Summer Academy engages grade 2 - 12 voices in vocal training and music reading. Singers perform classical, world music and Americana genres.

MET Summer Academy motivates singers’ unique talent through musicianship, scholarship, teamwork and leadership. It includes interactive sessions with guest artists who share middle Tennessee’s deep artistic network.


MET Academy includes Academic and Advocacy projects that nurture and resource the choral legacy throughout middle Tennessee for singers and music educators.

Academic Projects include: MET Choral Academy (after school sessions;, MET Academy Master Class/ Professional Development (In-School Master Classes for students with a Professional Development component for teachers); Choral Boot Camp (initiative to rebuild middle school choirs in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) district.


Advocacy Projects include: Singing in the City (quarterly retreats with expanded choral training for singers); Conversation Network (events for music educators linking them to middle TN’s pool of quality community choral resources for MNPS’s Music Makes Us - our Mayor’s initiative), WritingWorks! (new Commissioned works for children/youth choir ), as well as Competition & Scholarship Options (provided as requested by singers).
Impact
1. Decision to focus on 3 company programs instead of 4 in 2015 allowed us in 2016 to firmly establish our fourth program, WritingWorks!. There was increased teacher and singer participation and significant increase in funding and donor matching monies.
 
2. Volunteer teachers and collaboration with the Barbershop Harmony Society which continues to provide a music educator in residence as part of our faculty. Outcome of this goal brought more student participants, 100+, across our 3 programs.
 
2. The stabilized teacher recruitment,the increased funding received, and the interest of parents to continue their child's participation in 2015,  led to improved curriculum development and greater number of registrants for MET Summer Academy in 2016.
 
 3. Completion of the 2 year cycle of commissioned works resulting in MET Singers participation in premiers with Nashville Symphony Chorus (spring 2015) and Nashville Symphony (January 2016). Included in this preparation was the opportunity for singers to work and perform with 10 time Grammy award winner Dr. Cedric Dent, formerly of TAKE 6 and now professor of Vocal Jazz and Theory at Middle TN State University. They also worked with Dr. Dent in MET Summer Academy 2016, as he was artist in residence for the academy. 
 
Goals: 
 
 1. As an ongoing strategic goal, continue building our brand within Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) with music educators, and between MNPS and the services we provide. Impacting the music education and professional community's view of CAL as a choral arts network linking identified needs of local music teachers with resources: TN higher education music departments , as well as current and currently unidentified nonprofit arts organizations.
 
2. Design new strategies to implement  access to clients of Family & Children's Service of Nashville (FCS). These are children who have been absorbed into a relative's family structure do to events that have removed their parents (i.e., parent's death, incarceration, etc.). The family member that absorbs them have limited resources. 
 
3. Follow through with strategic study outcomes and define accountability steps for a shared board member option between non profits. We have identified two other arts related nonprofits that seek to better represent their clientele and the communities served through its board representation.

Services are open to Nashville Davidson county and surrounding counties that touch Davidson. Participants from 2015-2016 season represent Davidson, Robertson, Rutherford, and  Wilson counties.

Our goal is to reach representation from additional counties representing greater middle Tennessee.

Board Chair Statement

We have pointedly challenged our Board of Directors to a higher expectation of engagement and leadership.  This will professionally support our business processes as well as sustain growth. To this end, the level of achievement for, and cultivation of, board members provides Choral Arts Link (CAL) with progressive momentum.

Finally, we are also asking new board members to share corporate skill-sets in an environment of servant leadership.

 

CEO Statement

CAL is unique in the clientele it serves. The range of ages is inclusive of grades 2 - 12 with training that meets the needs of these age groups.

The clientele is unique for its universality. Children represent Nashville's many cultures and religions, different social and educational backgrounds with public, private, charter and home school singers among the various age levels.

  1. Unique in its faculty: Teachers are from elementary, middle, and high school level with performance degrees in voice, piano and music pedagogy. All teachers volunteer their time for weekly rehearsals. Through our fundraising/grant writing, teachers receive a modest stipend for quarterly retreats and performances.

  2. Unique in its working relationship with Nashville Public Schools. 

  3. Unique choral retreats venues - higher education facilities offering singers early exposure to universities including Tennessee State University, Lipscomb and Fisk Universities.

  4. Unique with opportunities to perform in many different venues in the Nashville area: Schermerhorn Symphony Center, David Lipscomb University, Fisk University, Tennessee State University, the Country Music Hall of Fame, TPAC and the Ryman. These venues represent much of the heritage that makes Nashville a cultural center.

  5. Unique in the variety of music and learning opportunities: authentic spirituals rendered in the tradition of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, commissioned works featuring national and local composers, and music from the Baroque period to the Blues. Guest Artists ranging in age from 18 to 65 representing Instrumental and Vocal music of many styles, perform and talk with students about their love of music and why Music Matters in their lives.

  6. Unique Singer expectations instill a sense of decorum, that is, the proper behavior not only on the stage while performing, but in all parts of their life; leadership, as each participant is encouraged to rise to new standards and then mentor others during rehearsals and performances.

  7. Unique in its efforts to foster the tradition of community singing in a time when music is perceived as private (smart phones) or loud (concerts) or disposable ( hit of the week). Traditions stressed begin with the voice as the primary and first instrument through which music touches the soul, through varying styles of North American and world music. Through the children who encounter CAL, our goal is that this tradition will not only survive but also thrive in the years to come.
Programs
Description The MET Singers is the signature performing arts program of Choral Arts Link Inc. Initially designed to serve as a model for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) in 1997, this ensemble now consists of singers from public, private, charter,  and home school settings in grades 2 through 12 representing middle Tennessee’s cultural pluralities. Established as a nonprofit in 2004, CAL continues its community-school alliance with Music Makes Us of Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.

Training provides critical thinking experiences in a laboratory setting, and offers civic-minded performances. The MET Singers volunteer & serve as the Nashville Symphony's Celebration Youth Chorus during its annual concert honoring Dr. M. L. King, Jr. Performance opportunities are products of high artistic standards implemented through focused mentoring and challenging repertoire.

Short Term Success We have worked to design a teaching model that offers choral foundations and performances as a quality equitable opportunity for children and youth. Our time tested high standards and rigorous discipline in a cross-generational atmosphere of mentoring challenges the novice and experienced singer to excel. There are a growing number of community choirs and MET continues as one of only two choir options that look like our state's growing cultural pluralism. Continuing this tradition and serving underserved populations as we expand in numbers served will indicate short-term success.

 

We would like to serve 25 singers in gr. 2 - 3 and 75 in gr. 4 - 12. We now average 10 (gr. 2-3) and 45 (gr. 4 - 12). With services to more singers representing diverse cultural and economic levels at an affordable fee structure, we have consistently been successful in maintaining high artistic standards. Continuing this success in artistic outcomes will be another indicator of short term success.

Long term Success  

A permanent site of our own is part of our strategic plan. Currently we are welcomed by West End IB World Middle School and have been there since 1997. A permanent site with quality rehearsal and performance spaces would offer opportunities to add depth to services and stabilize our teaching staff. MET Singers school year season now includes support services for singers without choral programs in their school who want to train and participate in local and statewide auditioned choral and solo opportunities. We offered this on a limited scale this fall with 2 singers; one placed in middle TN Women's Freshmen Honor Choir.

 

Long term success also includes providing fundamentals in vocal and choral singing including examples such as, beginning to advanced study in music reading and score analysis. We consider this a deepening of services because it grounds a singer/performer with skills and artistic experiences for a lifetime of sharing and participation in multiple music settings.

Program Success Monitored By

A collaboration with seniors in the Social Work Department of Lipscomb University in 2007 and 2009 provided survey tools designed to assess program successes and needed improvements. We also had the opportunity to observe students as they administered tools. The first tools were tabulated by students. We specifically asked for a tool that could be tabulated using an online eservice so we now have multiple tools for different populations served: singers, staff, volunteers and board.

Description MET Choral Camp began in 2001 as the summer training season held in July for seasoned and new singers. In 2016, the name changed to MET Summer Academy. It is the academy setting that lays the groundwork in relational thinking processes, music theory-sight reading, performance decorum and choral interpretation. Balancing this includes performance artistry multiple sized choral ensembles and work with guest choral directors Approximately 50 students participate each year. Our 2017 goal is to expand to 75+ singers.

Short Term Success
 

Focus on building numbers in middle school ages. this clientele segment is identified national as 'at risk' and our programming can serve as a source of leadership and decorum training. Increasing participants in this age bracket, grades 5 - 8, is a goal.

Long term Success  

There are 5 ensembles during this session: grades 2-3 and 4 - 12. Long term success would be to have 50 + singers in grades 2- 12 and 20-25 in grades 2-3.

Our challenge and goal is to provide quality, equitable performing arts opportunities to any child or youth.
 
One of our challenges is consistent workflow with our parent volunteers, a mechanism that matches their skills and interests with the needs of MET Singers. We have gone from a two person leadership team to four people which include two parents representing different age groups within the ensemble. It also includes two board members who are current and or past parents of MET Singers. We have also engaged a MET parent who is the volunteer coordinator for a much larger non profit here in Nashville. She has assessed our needs and provided recommendations which we are using as strategic steps to improve outcomes that support programming needs.
 
One challenge facing our organization is a steady rehearsal space for our MET Singers program. The fact that we are a small organization limits our ability for pay for space. With the growth of Nashville real estate and increasing pricing facility space rental is at a premium. We look for space that is at no cost (i.e.: police precincts) but as these places are becoming more popular we are having issues booking these spaces. Our organization is now looking to collaborate with local universities that have space we could utilize and provide opportunities for a “student lab” environment for students that may need community service hours, practicum hours, and student teaching sites). This type of focused collaboration provides a twofold benefit to our organization and becoming a community educational partner.

Our challenge is to develop new board members that diversify demographics culturally and in skill sets.
  
We are taking a steady, studied approach to develop new board members to better represent our clientele's cultural diversity and our need for a plurality of specific professional skill sets. We have have been successful in bringing on new board members that diversify identified skill sets based on strategic goals.
 
We are in discussion with two other non-profits to implement a board member exchange model that would help with our strategic goal of cultural diversification of our board. 
 
For the third year, we have engaged MET Alumni in administrative positions. During 2016, one of our MET alumni returned as an administrative assistant for MET Summer Academy, which included attending CAL board meetings. She is a graduate student at Yale University. 
 
We have fulfilled one strategic goal and that is a designated board member position, titled Young Professional for a MET alumni.
 
 CAL has continually worked to build a diverse board of directors. One of the challenges has been to recruit and retain members who add a diverse mix to reflect the children we serve. Board members are actively involved and engaged and have been recruited through strong community and personal relationships. In many cases board members have remained committed and served multiple terms. New and diverse talent, however has been a challenge to recruit and retain. We are addressing this by actively creating a list of targets, officially making it a sub-committee of the board and regularly cultivating community relationships – through board involvement and community support. This along with an active, current board, has allowed the organization to have focus on the challenge in a strategic manner.

Experience Margaret Campbelle-Holman is an educator, composer and music education consultant with over 40 years experience. The MET(METropolitan Nashville) Singers, a performing arts education program of Choral Arts Link, Inc. Her guidance as artistic director has provided choral arts mentoring for music educators, pre-service music education majors and choral performance training for upper elementary, middle and high school singers.
She develops presentations for classroom and music educators focused on integrated arts using critical and creative thinking skills. As an example of this, she has been called on by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Primarily Arts Network (PAN) project (2000-2002). Here she led curriculum retreats, demonstration lessons (on school sites) and mentored teacher training in individual classrooms. PAN was designed to enhance and enrich the education of public school students via the integration of music in the curriculum, for faculties of three participating schools in the Chicago Public Schools. Considered probationary schools in the state of Illinois, faculty participation was an effort to increase their Illinois test scores. The end of the project’s three year cycle showed significant improvements on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and Illinois Standards Achievement Tests.
Her work as founder and conductor of The MET Singers Honor Choir has involved her locally with three commissioned works:
Light The Way, a composing collaboration between Holman and Bernard Walker, premiered in 2001 with The Nashville Symphony, conducted by Kaye George Roberts
Proud Music of the Storm, by Bruce Saylor, commissioned by The Nashville Symphony for SSA, SATB chorus and orchestra, maestro Kenneth Schermerhorn conductor, premiered during NSO Classical Concert Series including opening night for MENC’s national conference, 2002
Out of Many One, a masterwork by Michael Slayton, co-commissioned by Lipscomb University and the Tennessee Arts Commission, performed with Ghanaian Drum and cello-oboe ensembles, premiered in 2004.
She is an author for Share the Music (1995) and Spotlight on Music (2005) series (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Pub.) and her compositions are found in multiple publications for music educators, social studies and preschool teachers. She is co-lyricist of the Official State Bicentennial School Song, My Home Will Always Be In Tennessee, set by composer Shirley McRae. Sharing her expertise includes residencies in Teaching Artistry for music, arts and school wide faculties for arts infused curriculum. She publishes choral literature for children’s choirs, choral camps and classroom music teachers.

CEO Comments This organization is volunteer based. We need consistent administrative support. We have secured pro-bono services from a public relations firm that helps with this challenge. We also have office space that has been provided that gives us an official established space that has been addressed as well. These services have also provided research to engage interns for administrative support. 
 
CAL's increased fundraising has provided small stipends for senior MET Singers to intern with the organization during their breaks in the school year.

Organization Comments Our president's guidance is engendering more productivity by  connecting with each board member and garnering their personal commitment in time and resources. 

 We began as a grassroots organization and have worked to engage new board members with more diversified corporate skill sets. This transition is a work in progress and challenges us in a new way of considering the term diversity - in skill sets. Candid, yet respectful communication paired with our unified determination to provide vital arts education performance services to our clientele has been, and continues to be a major part of our strategic progress.

 This new leadership using diversified skill sets offers new opportunities to capitalize on this steady momentum in support CAL programming.

Challenges: Since our income is seasonal, CAL’s cash flow has always a challenge.
 
Opportunities: 
 
Profile: CAL year-over-year differences has come from increase fundraising and grants. The expenses increases are related to Summer Camp time allotment and commissioned musical compositions to celebrate CAL milestones.

Youth Violence

In Tennessee, gang presence has been on the rise since the late 1980s and early 1990s, when gangs first made a concerted push into the state. Since 2011, police have identified at least 5,000 gang members in Davidson County, and gang-related crimes have increased by 25%. Meanwhile, cities with 50,000 or fewer inhabitants have seen gang-related crimes triple in frequency nationally since 2005.
