Mission Preserve Lindsley Avenue Now (PLAN) is a 501 (c )(3) organization dedicated to the historic preservation of Lindsley Avenue Church of Christ.
Background PLAN was formed in 2015 as a separate nonprofit whose sole purpose is to restore the historic Lindsley Avenue church building. Built in 1894 as Grace Presbyterian Church, the building has always been a beacon of hope for the South Nashville community. We wish to continue the work of helping "the least of these," including the homeless and children in poverty. To accomplish our goal of showing the love of Christ to all, we seek financial partners for not only the restoration of our beautiful old people, but also the modernization of our interior space for meal preparation, classrooms, and restrooms including showers.
Impact During the 12-month period ended June 30, 2017, PLAN completed three major projects as part of restoring the historic Lindsley Avenue Church building. The exterior wall facing the parking lot was completely tuck pointed, cleaned, and filled in as necessary with vintage brick obtained from salvage yards ($30,000). The interior of the same wall, which faces the main auditorium, was then re-plastered and painted. The shingle roof of the main turret was replaced with copper ($15,000), beautifying the 1894 "beacon of light" to the South Nashville community. Lastly, the front entrance facing the corner of Lindsley and Second Avenues was restored ($27,000). The entrance includes several unique decorative elements, including two turrets, terra cotta arches, a base relief, and limestone steps, all of which were cleaned and repaired. The entrance doors are now open to all who pass by on foot, facilitating the church's work of helping "the least of these." In partnership with Room in the Inn and another local congregation, the church members teach Bible classes on Thursdays at the shelter and on Sunday mornings at Lindsley Avenue. The congregation provides the Bible students with breakfast and a bag lunch, in addition to bus passes other assistance on a case-by-case basis.
Needs PLAN needs $200,000 to complete the exterior plan detailed in our preservation study prepared by Centric Architecture. The need consists of $125,000 for the cleaning and repair of the church's historic stained glass windows, which date from 1885 to 1894. The balance of $75,000 is for brick and tile repair, tuck pointing, and replacement of damaged or missing masonry.

The Lindsley Avenue church building is located on the corner of Lindsley Avenue and Second Avenue South, near downtown Nashville. It faces the Howard School municipal complex. The general neighborhood served is South Nashville. Specific sub-neighborhoods include Rutledge Hill, Rolling Mill Hill, Chestnut Hill, and the Napier and Sudekum housing complexes.
Board Chair Statement Our building serves as the meeting place for the Lindsley Avenue Church of Christ. This congregation began meeting in a private home in South Nashville 162 years ago. David Lipscomb was one of our first elders. Our beautiful National Historic Register building is one-of-a-kind, and a survivor of the interstate development of the 1960's. Many other historic buildings in our neighborhood have been lost. With the rapid residential renewal of nearby Rolling Mill Hill, and South Nashville in general, our church serves as a conspicuous and centrally-located landmark connecting the glory of the past to the exciting future of our community.
CEO Statement Please see the statement from the Board Chair. PLAN has no paid staff members. The trustees are a "working" board who serve voluntarily in performing executive, administrative and fund-raising functions.
Description Preserve Lindsley Avenue Now's sole program is to restore and expand the historic Lindsley Avenue church building. However, the congregation that meets in that building has a long history of fulfilling the material and spiritual needs of the community. On the church's campus are the Wayne Reed Christian Childcare Center as well as the original Youth Encouragement Services building. In addition, the church has worked with the Rescue Mission and Room at the Inn over the years. The congregation includes homeless and formerly homeless members.

CEO Comments PLAN's board consists of five members of the congregation meeting at the Lindsley Avenue Church. The board wishes to add members from outside of the congregation. The small size of the congregation  -- about 40 members -- limits its financial capacity to provide the necessary funds to complete the restoration of the church building. Although the congregation is self-supporting, the preacher must work full-time outside of the church during the week. PLAN therefore seeks funding from foundations and individuals wishing to restore an important historical landmark as well as to encourage the congregation's work of loving its neighbors, many of whom are in desperate need.
