Areas Served
Haiti makes up the western third of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.  Haiti is about the size of the state of Maryland and is three fourths mountains with a population of 11 million.  The economy is primarily agricultural and consists mainly of small-scale subsistence farming.  Haitian Creole and French are the primary languages.  Haiti is considered to be the poorest country in the western hemisphere.  Poverty affects Haitians in many ways including a lack of adequate housing, nutrition, education and healthcare, as well as a high infant mortality rate and a deteriorating environment.
Description Our Student Sponsor Program enables poor Haitian students to have hope for a brighter future through education.  Individual students are recommended to us by a parish representative in Haiti.  We solicit sponsors to provide financial support that enables each student to attend either elementary or secondary/high school.  We request $400 per student each year, but accept whatever the sponsor decides to give.  These funds help pay for tuition, fees, school uniform, books and school supplies.  Information and a photo of each student is provided to the sponsor, and students are required to write to their sponsor each time they receive assistance.  Two trusted friends in Haiti handle the distribution of funds and overseeing students.
