Mission

EPIC Girl exists to empower girls to reach their full potential through educational programs, mentoring, counseling and community activities.

Background

In 2015, EPIC Girl was created through a partnership with Davidson County Juvenile Court with the goal of providing supportive programming and mentorship to female adolescents 12-18, who are at greatest risk for exploitation due to past trauma, poverty and negative peer influence. EPIC Girl accomplishes its work through services offered on-site at the Juvenile Justice Center and at its agency offices in the Youth Opportunity Center at 1704 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville TN. By embedding its workers in both facilities that are located adjacent to the neighborhoods many of its participants reside in, EPIC Girl provides greater access and outreach, removing barriers to services to an often marginalized population.

Since its inception, EPIC Girl has educated over 250 girls using curriculum modeled on the theoretical foundations of Positive Youth Development (PYD) and Critical Youth Empowerment (CYE) Theory.

In 2016, Epic Girl expanded programming by adding mentoring to its menu of services so that girls are matched with a an adult female upon the completion of Identity and Empowerment classes.

Impact

In 2017 EPIC Girl has provided evaluation and programming on-site at Juvenile Court to 160 girls referred by the Juvenile Courts in Davidson and Williamson Counties. We’ve served 44 girls through our school based empowerment program. 62 girls have taken part in our long-term Empowerment curriculum gaining insight on healthy relationships, boundaries, self-esteem, and resolving conflict. 25 women have completed mentor training and committed to championing girls through meaningful relationships. We have also screened 148 runaway females through a collaborative grant with the courts, the Department of Children’s Services, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) to assess safety, identify girls who may be victims of trafficking or exploitation, and connect them to appropriate services. Through this screening process we’ve identified 13 girls who fit the criteria for trafficked youth or are at very high risk. We have partnered with the Sexual Assault Center (SAC) to educate girls on sexual boundaries and helped connect them to an SAC counselor to build strength and find their voice. We’ve educated 9 girls in juvenile detention who have delinquent offenses and advocated for 7 girls who are in the custody of the state, helping them find strength and use their strengths through difficult circumstances. We’ve trained over 200 court and state employees to recognize risk indicators for negative consequences in girls and help them engage in opportunities that change their outcomes.


Needs

Filling these needs are critical to the continued growth of our agency:

  • Funding to support the salary of a full-time Mental Health clinician, full-time administrative support and case management.
  • The development of a diverse stream of revenue for day-to-day agency operations and infra-structure.
  • In-kind or cash contributions for marketing efforts that will increase community awareness, stakeholders and allow greater outreach.
  • Revenue to support the training of 50 additional adult mentors each year so more girls are linked to caring, supportive adults.
  • Funding to support expansion as EPIC Girl grows.
Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer

The heartbeat of EPIC Girl are its adult mentors who provide engagement and positive modeling for the vulnerable, at-risk adolescent girls it serves. EPIC Girl needs women willing to act as mentors for a minimum of one year. EPIC Girl also depends on cash donations from the community it serves. A ten dollar donation may mean that an EPIC Girl is able to access transportation and attend programming with life-changing impact. A thirty five dollar donation will cover classes and mentor training for one EPIC Girl.

EPIC Girl’s services are offered at the Davidson County Juvenile Court and its agency located in a densely  populated and economically underprivileged area with limited resources. All girls from across the greater Nashville area are eligible to receive services.


CEO Statement

I've always understood that it can be harder for women to do things. In life, we are often told "girls don't do that" or "that's not a job suited for a woman.” And then, even after we leap obstacles and persevere through the task of balancing of family and career, women are told things like "you only got this because you're pretty" or "maybe you should just observe.” We are punished for speaking our minds, chastised for having opinions, and called pushy, aggressive and difficult.

I started EPIC Girl because I saw girls like me who had dreams and just needed help realizing them. These girls had an unfair disadvantage because of the hand they were dealt. And yet, they still had this glint in their eyes that said "I want more.” I just couldn't stand the thought of them floundering, trying to find their way amidst all the messages saying we can't have it all or we're not worthy or good enough. So I thought “What if a lot of strong, empowered, sometimes pushy, complex and beautiful women got together and showed the younger women that they were strong, capable and amazing?” That would be EPIC!! We should start that and change the world and inspire each other to go for it."

And so we did. We started EPIC Girl and we are strong, and beautiful, opinionated and EPIC.

Programs
Description
 As the first phase of a three tiered preventative intervention approach, Identity class is taught on-site at Juvenile Court. The two hour Identity Group serves adolescent females, ages 12-18 who have been referred by  Juvenile Court because of risky behaviors that have led to negative consequences, as well as identified risk factors.  Identity Curriculum that allows participants to recognize their vulnerabilities i.e. trauma, abuse, negative peers, low self-esteem, and then receive education that focuses on building and recognizing strengths and resiliency.  During Identity Group participants are also connected to partner providers who offer clinical services for issues
such as sexual abuse, psychiatric needs, or family counseling. After completion of Identity class, girls are invited to continue services by attending Phase two of programming, EPIC girl's five week Empowerment course.

Program Success Monitored By

Success is determined by completion of the course and active participation in course materials. Program outcomes are assessed utilizing surveys to help identify additional needs. Epic Girl, Inc. works in partnership with youth and other professionals to establish resources and treatment programs to decrease the likelihood of victimization or negative consequences.


Measurements of success are also developed in collaboration with the program being served. For example, for juvenile court/probation programs we assess the number of youth served through IDENTITY that re-enter the system through probation or as a delinquent. We work closely with the programs that we partner with to ensure that expectations are clearly defined for their population, treatment options and needs are clearly stated and case management tracks progress for the specified amount of time appropriate for their population.


Description Girls who have completed the Identity Group curriculum and request follow up services, are invited to attend the five-week relationship building, Empowerment group. The Empowerment curriculum, provides instruction on the development of healthy relational skills and boundaries in a group setting. Girls must complete the Empowerment course before being connected with their trained Mentors.

Description
Epic Girls Mentoring Program is based on a model of dual mentorship. After completing the Identity and Empowerment Groups, participants have the option of being paired with two adult female mentors who partner to provide the stability, positive reinforcement and positive modeling so desperately needed by young exploitable females. Mentors are vetted and receive extensive training prior to being paired with a girl. Both Mentors, and participants must agree to a commitment of engagement for a minimum of one year. For many Epic Girls, the Mentorship Program may be the first positive adult relationship they have had in their lives.

Experience

Stacia Freeman, MA (CEO) is the founder and CEO of Epic Girl. Stacia holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Audiology. During her 10 years as Executive Director of Abolition International, Stacia recognized the need for secondary prevention curriculums dedicated to identifying root causes leading to risks and developing educational protocols to prevent negative consequences such as trafficking from occurring. In 2012, Stacia began serving youth in the Davidson County Juvenile Court system leading her to pilot the programs in 2015 that would ultimately lead to the founding of EPIC GIRL in 2016. In her capacity, Stacia has also worked as a trainer for Child Protective Services, providing instruction on high risk behaviors in teen girls. She has also been a yearly speaker at the Court Professional’s State Conference since 2012 on the topics of risks for sex trafficking in teen girls and the prevention of negative outcomes.

Kathryn York serves as the Vice President and COO and lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband and two children.  She received her BA in Music at Belmont University in 2005 and worked in the music industry for three years.  She joined the staff of Abolition International in 2008 serving as Administrative Assistant and later as part of the Marketing team to help develop data management, social media and events including engaging music artists in the cause raising over $150,000 to support organizational efforts.  Kathryn led exploratory trips to India, Bangladesh and championed start up facilities at various stages of development around the U.S.  Kathryn was an integral part of helping raise awareness and funds to grow Abolition International (later Hope for Justice) from an $80,000 organization to an international entity serving on three continents to restore and restore victims of trafficking and exploitation.

Charity Glenn (Mentor Coordinator) Prior to employment at EPIC Girl, Charity worked as a Family Services Case Manager for the entire Early Head Start Program at Starfish Family Services in Inkster, Michigan. In Michigan, she co-founded a Mentoring program serving at risk girls age 7-17. She is responsible for all training and coordination of the mentoring program.
