Problem:  All schools receiving Federal funding are required to hold a program the week of  September 17th for Constitution Day. In Tennessee, it is required to teach about the Constitution during the same week called “Celebrate Freedom Week”.

In a survey of teachers, there were 3 main obstacles preventing them from holding a program:

1) A majority was not aware of the mandate or of “Constitution Day” September 17th.

2) No funds are provided to fulfill the federal or state mandates.

3) There is no program readily available and teachers must come up with their own resources.

With Ashland City, Tennessee as our home base, The 917 Society will provide free of charge an exciting, intriguing film (20 min,. narrated by Emmy winner Nick Clooney) which teachers can use as a program, a long-lasting, durable pocket-size copy of the U.S. and State of Tennessee Constitution, as well as Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.  Sponsors of The 917 Society will be acknowledged for contributing to the printing of the Constitutions, as well as in film credits and on The 917 Society website for the 2017-2018 school year. Attached is a list of 8th grade by county as well as total private and home school in Tennessee.

Joni Bryan is the founder of The 917 Society.  Realizing there was an existing a gap in our education system concerning the Constitution, and with no money, she began her research and efforts to make this program a reality. Eighth grade students were chosen to focus the efforts due to the fact it is a crucial  year in the U.S. and Tennessee curriculum in which civics is supposed to be taught.

Upon learning of the Federal mandate, Joni realized this program could also fulfill the law. She worked countless overtime hours at her current job to provide funds for the non-profit. Joni  completed all necessary steps to be a 501(c)3.  The non-profit information for The 917 Society is listed at www.givingmaters.com with the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

Upon needing a narrator for the film, Joni was able to recruit Nick Clooney. She started building connections and has attended the Tennessee Social Studies Teachers Conference these past several years. Joni learned first-hand the need for the program. Teachers across the state have signed up and are excited to have this available to help them as a resource for their classes.

Joni began reaching out to State Legislators and was able to get Senator Kerry Roberts involved.  Sen. Roberts spearheaded the first Constitution Day event on September 17 2016 at The Factory in Franklin. From this event Senator Mark Green became a donor.  As word spread and publicity grew, The 917 Society began to grow throughout  the community and state, with more leaders becoming involved such as Lee Beaman, Dr. Ming Wang and others listed on our website on the Society Members tab. The timing is prime to launch our program as awareness has grown of the lack of understanding of our Constitution by our youth, as well as awareness of the Federal and State mandates by our elected officials a program is supposed to be conducted for Constitution Day.
*Currently all staff are strictly volunteers and work other jobs. They have dedicated their time, resources and energy to keep The 917 Society moving forward. They are as follows:

We recently held a red Carpet Fundraising event with Nick and Nina Clooney in attendance at the Franklin Theatre. We were able to raise funds to complete the preproduction of our film. We gained many new supporters and media sponsors through this event. We have reached 20% of our budget and are working to finalize our budget for 2017 with a Constitution Day Celebration on September 17th

1) Produce a film to be shown to eighth grade students that demonstrates how the U.S. Constitution affects their lives; narrated by Nick Clooney

2) We are enhancing our website that offers educational and curriculum support to teachers and students to ensure a better understanding of the U.S. Constitution while also providing the infrastructure for individual and corporate donations. Creating an app and a membership drive to become self-supporting through our members.

3) Provide a free pocket version of the U.S. Constitution to each and every eighth grade student in the United States which will create a sense of ownership of the document and do so each school year on September 17th to commemorate Constitution Day and fulfill the federal law that publicly-funded schools must develop and deliver programs on that day relevant to the Constitution.
We have raised over $52,000 toward our goal and need $198,000 to complete our program for the September 17th Constitution Day program to fulfill federal and state mandates.

Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Opportunities to support the 917 Society include: volunteering, in-kind donations, online donation, mailing a check and participating in social media publicity efforts.

We have three main programs.

1)A film to be shown in the classroom to commemorate Constitution day and to encourage curiosity about the State and U.S. Constitutions. The film is narrated by Nick Clooney and he and his wife Nina co- hosted our fundraiser May 23rd 2017.

2)We will provide a free commemorative keepsake State and U.S. Constitution to each eight grade teacher and their class. They may download the film and order the books fro our website. Shipping is also provided. This will serve approximately 90,000 students.
3)We also have a website that will provide ongoing education and be interactive with student and teacher participation.

Our biggest obstacle is funding. We have raised over 51,000 and complete the film narration with Nick Clooney and pre-production on the film. We held a fundraiser May 23rd and we are raising funds through individuals, corporate donations and foundations and grants and through a membership drive.

Update:2016 We traveled to the Tennessee Social Studies Teachers Conference and received extremely positive feedback from the classroom teachers. We signed up a large group of teahcers eager to participate serving thousands of students in Tennessee.

Joni began her career as a Social Worker for the State of Alabama Department of Human Resources aftergraduating form the University of North Alabama. Working in the field and supervising a staff, she developed a passion for those who feel voiceless in our society. She went to work for the Muscle Shoals Board of Education as an adult education instructor for the JOBS program. She was able to see firsthand how changing a persons way of thinking empowers them to change their life. In two short years, her GED graduation percentage of students in the program went from only 5% to 35%. Fast forward a few years and she found herself facing a traumatic situation that left her feeling voiceless. To deal with the struggle she turned to writing. She has received recognition from the Nicholl's Fellowship, a division of the Oscar Awards, by placing in the top 20% for two years. She also was a finalist for the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. As she found her own voice again, she wanted to inspire young people to find their voice. She believes we must lead by example and is the first $5,000 contributor to the 917 Society.
